Most cataracts develop with age, or with an injury. They can also occur from a previous surgical procedure performed on the eye. Other factors such as diabetes, sun damage, exposure to radiation, and prolonged use of certain medications can also cause cataracts. Another cause for cataracts is congenital defects. This occurs when a fetus develops cataracts due to infection, injury, or poor development within the womb. Factors such as smoking, drinking, and genetics may increase the risk of developing cataracts as well.
